Teeth Crowns
Serving New York City & Manhattan, New York
A Teeth Crown is a cap that is fitted over a natural tooth for the purpose of restoring the size, strength, shape or appearance of a tooth. In some cases, a crown can also be placed over a dental implant. The crown is shaped like the tooth that it is made to cover.
At the New York Dentist office of Cosmetic Dentist Dr. Michael Iott and Associates in Manhattan, New York they are experts in placing all types of dental crowns.
When cemented into its position, the crown completely covers the visible part of the tooth that lies above the gum line.
Reasons for a Teeth Crown
A dental crown may be used under any of the following circumstances:
- For covering a dental implant
- For holding a dental bridge in place
- For covering a severely discolored or misshapen tooth
- For restoring a worn or broken tooth
- For keeping a weakened tooth from breaking
- For holding a cracked tooth together
- For covering and supporting a tooth that is more filling than enamel
Materials Used in Making Crowns
Permanent crowns can be made from a variety of materials including: entirely metal, porcelain that is fused to metal, resin or ceramic materials. The type of material used depends on your dentist's preferences, your preferences, the cost and the purpose of the crown.
Metal
Metal crowns are made from gold alloy, palladium or base-metal alloys like nickel and chromium. Metal crowns require less removal of the underlying tooth's structure. Also, the wear caused on opposing teeth by the metal crown is minimal.
The metal crown also stands up to chewing and biting force longer than other crown and they hardly ever chip or break. The biggest downfall of metal crowns is the metal color. For this reason, they are the best choice for teeth that are out of sight.
Porcelain Fused to Metal
These dental crowns can be matched to the color of your natural adjacent teeth. Aside from completely ceramic crowns, this type of crown looks the most like a real tooth.
One downfall is that there is more wear to opposing teeth than with the metal or resin crowns. The porcelain part of the crown is also susceptible to chipping and breaking and in some cases the metal underneath the porcelain can show through. This type of crown is a good choice for front or back teeth.
Resin
Resin dental crowns are the least expensive of all of the crown materials. The unfortunate issue is that they wear down with time and are more susceptible to fracture than other crowns.
Ceramic or Porcelain
Crowns made of ceramic or porcelain offer the best color match to your natural teeth. They are also recommended for patients who suffer from metal allergies. The down side is that they are not as strong as the porcelain fused with metal types and they are harder on opposing teeth than other crown materials. This material is a good choice for front tooth crowns.
