Bleaching
in the News
In addition to dentist-prescribed whitening procedures, over-the-counter
procedures, most in the form of a toothpaste, also exist.
These procedures use either abrasives or other chemicals to
remove external staining from your teeth. To whiten the natural
color of your teeth, a bleaching agent is required.
Dentist-prescribed
home bleaching trays contain a 10% peroxide solution, and
the in-office procedures usually contain up to 50% peroxide
solutions. It is the position of both the American Dental
Association and this office that in order to use a whitening
product containing a bleaching agent, such as peroxide solutions,
a professional consultation and supervision is required to
ensure your safety and the efficacy of the treatment.

Teeth Whitening treatments have been featured on TV news programs,
in top newspapers, and in both popular national and regional
magazines. Here are some notable excerpts:
“I
then got up from my chair and took my first look in the mirror
(after having the BriteSmile procedure done). ‘Wow.
Wow.’ Those were my exact words. I don’t think
I’ve seen my teeth look so white since around age 12
or so, a few thousand cups of coffee ago.”
“Grin and Bear It” – AskMen.com,
August 3, 2002
“I know someone who has had [BriteSmile Professional
Teeth
Whitening] done, and they had tetracycline stains on their
teeth, which is very hard – the normal whitening procedures
don’t work – and it did work. It did lighten their
teeth a number of shades.”
WCAU-TV (NBC) Channel 10 Philadelphia, April 18, 2002
"Celebrities
far and wide are dreaming of the 2002 Academy Awards on March
24...then the moment they've all been waiting for: picking
up this year's Oscar Basket. Given to presenters and performers
following their stage appearances each basket will be stuffed
with $20,000–that's right, $20,000–worth of sumptuous
goodies, including...a teeth whitening session at BriteSmile
($600)."
People Magazine, March 25, 2002
"This is a very generous way for the Academy to thank
the presenters and performers. In the last few years, it was
the A-list of luxury companies....[including] BriteSmile
Teeth Whitening...a $600 value. So coffee and drinking and
red wine can be wiped away."
The Today Show guest Robert Verdi with Katie Couric,
March 18, 2002
"The before and after photos are shocking – my
teeth look eight shades whiter...I love the results."
Bridal Guide Magazine, March/April 2002
"Among the
most popular [teeth whitening options] is the BriteSmile system,
which was developed by John Warner, a former NASA scientist,
and is administered by about 3,000 independent dentists nationwide
and in 14 company-owned centers in 12 cities..."
New York Times, July 8, 2001
"At BriteSmile,
a national chain that uses plasma-light technology to whiten
teeth nine-plus shades in about an hour, patients can view
a movie during their treatments...now that's dental-tainment!"
Rosie Magazine, May 2001
"Nobody is
turned on by a grungy grin, which is why BriteSmile tooth
whitening spas are opening nationwide. During the procedure,
which takes about an hour, a dentist paints your teeth with
a bleaching gel, then exposes them to a gas plasma light while
you snooze or watch TV. There's no pain and lots to gain."
Playboy, March 2001
"BriteSmile
is a company that says it can whiten your teeth within an
hour. Now, so many people are doing this. But we thought it
would be interesting, if they can do it within an hour, we
could check out the process on the air. And so this morning,
we will see the results...Smile for me and let me see this,
because we took a 'before' picture of you. OK, there's the
'after',
and there's the 'before'. That is quite a difference!"
Good Morning America Host Charles Gibson, February
2001
"There's no
pain, there's no discomfort, there's no ache. There's really
nothing. I even slept through it."
Penny Marks, patient - WAGA-TV Atlanta, Fox5 News
at 5
"At
BriteSmile Professional Teeth Whitening Centers - the oral
equivalent of spa-like laser-hair-removal outlets - [in one
hour] the combination of gas plasma light treatment and hydrogen
peroxide gel lightened choppers about nine shades."
