Am I a Candidate for Porcelain Veneers?
Serving New York City & Manhattan, New York
Veneers are a popular choice for teeth that are too small, too big, or uneven. Made from dental porcelain, veneers are very thin wafers placed over the front teeth to change their color or shape. Manhattan Cosmetic Dentist Dr. Michael Iott has been doing porcelain veneers for many years now and can quickly assess whether they'd be a good choice for you.
Problems solved by veneers
Veneers solve dental problems which are not severe. They do it by covering or camouflaging them, and giving the treated teeth a new front surface, with a new shape, color, and size. Typical problems would be:
- Small chips or cracks
- Spots or stained areas
- Slight crookedness
- Slight misalignment
- Small gaps in between teeth
- Unevenly sized teeth
If your teeth have more severe misalignment, gaps, or crookedness, you might need orthodontic work. If the chips or cracks are too severe, you might need a porcelain onlay or crown. Dr. Iott can determine by examining your teeth whether porcelain veneers are the best solution or not. Your free, private consultation with Dr. Iott is an important opportunity to have all your questions answered about veneers. There might be other, better ways to correct your smile and restore its natural health and beauty.
First whiten your teeth
Dental porcelain is not affected by bleaching agents. So if you think your teeth need whitening, get this done, or do it at home with one of Dr. Iott's take-home kits, before having veneers done. That way, Dr. Iott can color the veneers to match your newly whitened teeth.
Only one visit
Porcelain veneers usually take two visits: one to prepare the tooth surfaces and take an impression of them for the dental lab to work from, and a second to attach the veneers. However, Dr. Iott has CEREC technology. That means it will require only one visit. Dr. Iott will make the veneers using his CEREC machine, instead of sending a tooth impression to a dental lab. This machine has a laser scanner which records and measures your teeth more precisely than the putty-like material traditionally used for an impression. The laser sends this information as radio signals to a milling unit, where a small block of ceramic is sculpted by diamond burs.
Dr. Iott will first color that ceramic to match your natural teeth. The end result will be a new tooth even stronger than your natural one was, that looks and functions like a natural tooth. Porcelain is stain-resistant like glass, and although by itself it's brittle, when bonded to a tooth, it's extremely durable and sturdy.
To maintain your veneers, you'll need good dental hygiene, the same as you should be practicing anyway, on your natural teeth. Brush twice or more each day, and floss each night. Visit Dr. Iott twice a year for professional cleaning and a thorough checkup. If you do these things, your shiny veneers will last many years.
