Anterior Tooth Crown

Restorative Dentistry in New York City

Tooth CrownAnterior tooth crowns are restorations used on your front teeth. Esthetics is an important factor in the fabrication of an anterior crown. Because your smile is so important, anterior crowns need to match your existing teeth perfectly, or properly correct unesthetic situations.

A crown is a tooth-like restoration which is placed over and completely covers a prepared tooth. Crowns are used when a large amount of tooth structure needs to be replaced and there is insufficient structure to place a filling.  Crowns are also used to support and protect fractured teeth, and teeth that have had root canal treatment. For esthetic reasons, crowns are used to cover teeth whose shape and color do not complement your smile.

Traditional Crowns
In the past, the tooth that was to receive a crown was prepared, impressions were taken and a temporary crown was placed while an outside lab fabricated the crown from the impression. The completed crown was typically ready and returned from the lab approximately two to three weeks later. The temporary crown was then removed and the new crown was cemented.

CEREC Crowns
Anterior crowns made using our CEREC system are made and permanently placed while you wait. On the same day that the tooth is prepared, the permanent crown can be placed, without having to place a temporary crown or to utilize an outside lab.

CEREC Tooth CrownAn important advantage of CEREC crowns is that the esthetics can be controlled first-hand by both you and your doctor. The crown is fabricated while you wait and is sized and shaped by your doctor. Through the process of custom staining and glazing, your doctor can provide a perfect color match on the same day. Traditional lab-fabricated anterior crowns are not always the perfect shade and may need to be redone. Also, if esthetics are of high concern, many traditional dental offices will fabricate crowns for two or more teeth, because achieving a perfect match with just one laboratory-fabricated crown is too difficult. At our office, by using CEREC and on-site custom staining and glazing, this is not an issue - if a single crown is all that's required, it can be fabricated, exactly color-matched to its neighboring teeth and permanently placed in a single visit!
