A conventional bridge, also known as a traditional fixed bridge, is a false tooth, known as a pontic, which is fused between two porcelain crowns to fill in the area left by a missing tooth. This procedure is used to replace one or more missing teeth. Unlike removable partial dentures, fixed bridges cannot be taken out of the mouth by the patient. A conventional (fixed) bridge typically consists of three units -the pontic (the false tooth), and two crowns, one on each side of the pontic, to which the pontic is fused. The crowns are cemented to abutment teeth, thus creating the permanent bridge.
