Local Antibiotic Therapies

Atridox Gum Disease TreatmentAtridox (Doxycycline hyclate 10%)
Atridox is a semi-synthetic tetracycline derivative that is used in local antimicrobial treatment of periodontal pockets. Following scaling and root planing of the affected sites, liquid Atridox is placed along the gingival margins. Once it comes in contact with the fluid along the gingiva, it becomes a hardened gel which can be packed into the periodontal pocket. Atridox is bioabsorbable in 7 days, and re-evaluation of the site by your doctor is conducted 30 days later.

Perio Chip (Chlorhexidine gluconate)
PerioChip Gum Disease TreatmentThis is a small chip containing 2.5mg of chlorhexidine gluconate. The Perio Chip is placed into any periodontal pockets following scaling and root planing. It is bioabsorbable over 8 days and provides a continuous, sustained release of antibiotic into the site.

Actisite (Tetracycline hydrochloride)
Actisite is a fiber impregnated with tetracycline hydrochloride. It is placed into periodontal pockets following scaling and root planing and releases a continuous flow of tetracycline into the pocket. The fiber biodegrades in 10 days.

Emdogain
Atridox Gum EmdogainTreatmentA very recent development in gum disease treatment is an enamel matrix protein called Emdogain. This protein is completely biocompatible and is used to treat infrabony defects - defects in the bone surrounding teeth which can be risk factors in periodontal disease. It is used in conjunction with periodontal surgery and has been shown to increase the attachment level of gingiva on teeth, and alveolar bone height. This regeneration of tissues and bone make Emdogain the next generation for treatment of periodontal defects.

Periostat (Doxycycline 20mg)
Periostat Gum Disease TreatmentPeriostat is a systemic medication used in the treatment of gum disease. Doxycycline, an antibiotic at high doses, has been shown to have anti-collagenase activity at low doses. Collagenase, an enzyme, destroys the fibers providing gingival attachment, causing a loss of this attachment and thereby contributing to periodontal disease. Periostat suppresses the overproduction of this enzyme by your body. Periostat is a tablet taken twice daily. It may be taken for as long as 12 months, however your doctor will decide the length of treatment depending on the stage of periodontal disease that you have.
