The Implant Dentistry Process

Manhattan, New York Implant Dentist

Here is a step-by-step process of how a missing tooth can be replaced through the implant dentistry process. Under certain conditions, an implant can be placed immediately after the tooth is extracted. The average time for healing is four months for the lower jaw, and six months for the upper. Then a new tooth can be made.

1. Place the Implant - With gum tissue opened to expose the area of bone, a special drill is used. Once the bone has been prepared, the implant can be placed.

2. Healing Phase - Sutures are removed within 7 to 14 days. During the healing phase, usually 3 to 6 months, the gum tissue covers the implant site. The bone then begins to grow onto the newly placed implant. This process is called osseointegration.

3. Uncover the Implant - The gum tissue is opened and a healing collar is placed onto the implant. The healing collar helps the gum tissue get ready for a new prosthetic tooth.

4. Attach the Post - The healing collar is removed and a special post is attached to the implant which will support the new crown.

5. Deliver the Crown - Impressions are taken, and a temporary crown is placed until the final crown is ready to fit over the new post.
