Common Problems Solved by Dental Implants
Manhattan, New York
If you are one of the many who have suffered the loss of your natural teeth, implant surgery may be for you. Dr. Iott in Manhattan, NY can answer your questions fully if you’d like to set up a courtesy consultation to see if you’d be a good candidate for dental implants.
Dental implants are changing the way people enjoy life! With modern advances in dental implant technology, people are quickly rediscovering how comfortable it can be to socialize, eat favorite foods, speak without fear, laugh to their heart’s content and enjoy life once again with confidence.
How Do Dental Implants Work? They are a substitute for the roots that once held your tooth in place. They are implanted either in the jawbone, or on it, beneath the gum tissue, and they support a porcelain crown or a bridge. This solves many current problems and avoids future ones:
- It fills the gaps left by missing teeth
- It prevents the surrounding teeth from migrating to fill that gap, getting themselves out of alignment
- This in turn prevents eventual jaw pain and severe headaches resulting from TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome), which can be caused by misaligned teeth
- It preserves the contours of your facial features, because unfilled gaps left by missing tooth roots eventually cause the jawbone to shrink in that area, changing the shape of your jaw

The procedure Your visit to Dr. Iott’s office begins with a thorough periodontal examination, including X-rays. A second appointment will be scheduled to discuss your proposed treatment plan, including a discussion of the surgery, any risks, how many visits will be required to complete your implants, how long it will be before your implants are completed, and any possible alternative treatments.
First, the implant is placed, and then several months are allowed to pass, while the jawbone heals and grows in around the implant. Some plate-form implants don’t need this healing period.
Then an abutment is attached to the implant, which is a tiny projection to hold the porcelain crown. This heals quickly, and then the crown is attached to the abutment. The result is a very strong and durable new tooth.
