The pulp of a tooth (the soft tissue in the center comprised mainly of nerves and blood vessels) becomes infected or dies.			The pulp is removed and the canals are cleaned, enlarged and shaped. The tooth is then allowed to heal and it can subsequently be restored with a filling or crown.
