This wonderful project will give the indigenous community of Azama, next to Otavalo, Ecuador the opportunity of dreaming of better days. The population of Azama is composed of approximately 3000 people. They work in flower plantations and in a cement industry. Children at the age of six are usually already working.
Bonnie Lunt's People Helping People has provided these beautiful people with a school where they will be able to discover the world through books - also learn English and Spanish - a health care center and, together with New York City cosmetic dentist, Dr. Michael Iott, a dental clinic as well.
In November, Monica Pelaez and Dr. Gustavo de Oliveira went to Azama, Ecuador to jump start the treatments and give back to these gorgeous people the healthy and beautiful smile they deserve.

Monica Pelaez went to Ecuador in September, 2005 to start reporting the files and collect information about their actual dental situation. The lack of educational resources combined with a high carb based diet is creating big dental issues. Monica took pictures and what we see behind these angelical faces is a sad reality of decays and future extractions. But we are ready to change it and make a whole lot of difference for this community.
Dr. Michael Iott’s team will be frequently going to Ecuador to keep up the dental work, not only with a treatment plan but most importantly, with a prevention plan that has the eradication of dental diseases in the area as the major goal.
