Dental implants are tiny titanium posts that your cosmetic dentist will surgically place into the bone, providing a secure foundation for individual artificial teeth. This can be done in two surgical procedures spaced about 3 - 6 months apart. In some cases, the cosmetic dentist can complete the implant in one visit. Dental implants are highly suitable for people missing individual teeth, whereas dentures are a more complete solution for people who are missing many teeth in a row.
Dentures are what many people might call ‘false teeth’ or a ‘plate’. They generally are designed to replace more than one missing tooth. Dentures are usually removable, but there are different styles, such as those that bond or clip onto your teeth. Immediate dentures are put in place after teeth have been lost or removed, and conventional dentures are placed after tissues have healed from the removal or loss of the teeth. Another type of denture is called an ‘over denture’, fitting over a small group of remaining natural teeth or implants.
Dentures can be made to fit your upper or lower missing teeth. Patients missing a few teeth in a row can opt for a removable partial denture. Fixed partial dentures, often called a ‘
crown and bridge’, are made from crowns or caps that fit on the remaining teeth, acting as abutments and made from materials that closely resemble the missing teeth.
Fixed bridges are generally more costly than removable dentures but also considered to be more stable.
Individuals missing all of their teeth can be fitted with complete dentures.
